São Cristóvão is a traditional neighborhood in the Central Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. Located in the Centro and Historic Center region, its Lusitanian settlement began with the foundation of the Church of São Cristóvão in 1627, then on the seafront. At the time, fishermen tied their boats next to the church doors to attend masses, and it soon became a village of fishermen and traders. In 1803, a mansion was built on a hill, from which there was a good view of Guanabara Bay, which became known as Paço de São Cristóvão, which was chosen by D. João VI to be the Royal Palace of the House de Bragança, seven years later; what was maintained even after Brazil's Independence; becoming the Imperial Palace; being surrounded by other manors where nobility families resided; which gave it the nickname Bairro Imperial.
